Sunita Williams is an Indian-American astronaut who has a record-breaking career at NASA. In 2007, she became the first woman to serve as the commander of the International Space Station (ISS). A veteran of two space missions, Williams has spent over 30 years of her life working at NASA.
Early Life and Education
Williams was born in Euclid, Ohio on September 19, 1965. Her parents were Indian immigrants who had come to the United States in search of a better life. Williams excelled in her studies and went on to attend the United States Naval Academy, where she graduated in 1987 with a degree in engineering.
NASA Career
After graduating from the Naval Academy, Williams went on to become a helicopter pilot. In 1998, she was selected from a group of over 2,000 applicants to become a NASA astronaut. Her first mission to space was in 2002, where she spent six months aboard the ISS. During her second mission in 2006, she became the first woman to serve as the commander of the ISS.
Legacy
Williams's career at NASA has been marked by her hard work, dedication, and determination. In addition to her record-breaking accomplishments, she has also been a role model for women and girls all over the world. In 2012, Williams was inducted into the Astronaut Hall of Fame.

Williams is married to Michael Williams, a retired Navy captain. The couple has two children. In her spare time, Williams enjoys spending time with her family, reading, and hiking.
