Born in Wapato, Washington, on February 20, 1936, Hovis grew up in Houston, Texas. He began his career as a singer, but his breakthrough role came in the popular television sitcom "Hogan's Heroes," where he played the beloved character of Sergeant Andrew Carter.

The show ran from 1965 to 1971 and became a cultural phenomenon. Hovis's portrayal of the resourceful and lovable sergeant solidified his status as a fan favorite.
